Scrubs – and why I love it

2001 saw the start of a new series that, personally, was genuinely life changing. 
A mix of odd comedy and poignant messages created a connection between viewer and sitcom that was frankly a bit strange. Almost all of the episodes in the 8 (good) seasons (this blog will ignore season 9) were started with the word ‘My…’ to create a diary feel, allowing those of us watching to relate to the problems several of the characters face. The following series of blogs are an expression of gratitude to everyone involved with Scrubs.
Centred around a new medical intern, John Dorian (J.D), the show demonstrates a rare ability to explore several struggles within a single episode, usually similar to ‘real life’ challenges. 
On a personal note, there is no doubt that the stage of life I was at allowed me to buy in to the show. Going through high school as I was and experiencing all the hormonal changes that comes with being a teenager, it created a melodramatic internal monologue; a central theme for J.D throughout the show with that being the style of narration.
For a number of years I was able to relive the show due to it being replayed almost constantly on Comedy Central (Friends syndrome). Suddenly, though, that stopped. At the time I didn’t mind as, truth be told, I’d probably seen all the episodes far too many times within a 10 year window. 
But in 2016 I started to miss it. With all of the things I gave up my time to in 2017, the occasional Scrubs binge on YouTube was one of my most nostalgic. I genuinely started to miss the characters. I forgot how cool Turk was, how strong Carla was, how heartless Dr Kelso could be as well as how much I loved J.D’s on and off love interest, Elliot (but who didn’t?!)
Quite wonderfully, 2018 brought with it a new beginning. From Series 1 episode 1, Comedy Central brought back Scrubs. With a couple of click of the remote it was set to Series Record and my opportunity to watch it as and when I pleased presented itself. 
I know there’s a large group of people though who get what I’m talking about. Those who understand the complexities of the characters and how they all work together. Those who both laughed and learned from each and every episode. Those who would love the chance to re-watch every episode again for the first time and go through all the emotions. 
As a group of fans I know we’d all like to thank Bill Lawrence et all who created the show. J.D, Elliot, Turk, Carla, Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso for leading the show. Ted, the Janitor, the Todd, Laverne, Jordan, Hooch, Doug Gift shop girl, Keith, Tasty coma wife, Julie, Rex, Sean… all hilarious and integral characters in their own right.
The goal of these blogs is to go through that journey again myself, bundle it all up and share it with you. 

Great Expectations

Okay, ignore the last one. It’s interesting that all those quotes (and many similar ones referencing disappointment) were sourced by searching for the word ‘expectations’. We immediately create a link between what we think and/or hope will happen and how disappointed we might feel after. No wonder! It is absolutely ourselves that create that reaction. For example, if a professional boxer is in the ring during a fight and gets punched they should probably realise that was always a possibility and not allow it to upset them. However, should they get punched whilst walking around the supermarket then they have every right to get angry. Similarly, if you’re stupid enough to punch a professional boxer in Tesco…

Part of my issue is this thread of avoiding any high expectations to avoid the lows of disappointment. I think that’s called Epicurean or something like that. It’s okay to have expectations but we need to manage them appropriately. Epicurus lived his life believing that one should limit his or her desires. This was based on the belief that living with the finer things in life means the absence will create upset or hurt. With his whole philosophy based on the absence of pain and suffering, he lived a very basic life. There is a lot that can be said for that and I would certainly argue against materialism but why can’t we afford ourselves some positive, reasonable expectations?

If you saw your friend working in a clothes shop and thought ‘brilliant, I may be able to get a discount’, that’s certainly not unreasonable. However, if you thought ‘brilliant, free clothes’ then you’re setting yourself up for fall. It’s not the positive expectation that has let you down, it’s overdoing the expectation.

I believe that it is the management (or lack of) of these expectations that can lead to a lot of our stress. If someone cuts you up in traffic, a lot of people would get angry; lights flashed and horns tooted. We start to get territorial with the belief that not only do we own our car but the 4 feet of space all around it as well. In truth, based on laws, rules, and codes the other driver is most definitely in the wrong. They should not have done what they did. However, anyone who has been driving for any length of time will have realised that it happens. And THIS is where we need to manage our expectations.

If we can manage these thoughts based on past experiences as well as our own values we can start to become more resilient. What else do we do to ultimately and inevitably disappoint ourselves? Sick of not getting a new job? Even though you’ve not sent out any applications. Not getting fitter? Even though you don’t go to the gym. If you set your own expectations purely on thoughts and wishes, then they will become disappointments. Action is required.

Take control. Give yourself a chance to meet your own expectations. And never, ever make your mum angry or disappointed. Trust me.




The Power of Travelling

“The world is a book, and those who do no travel read only one page.”

Living in the 21st century the opportunity to see the world has never been greater. A quick search now tells me that the furthest city from my home town of Edinburgh is Dunedin, New Zealand. For less than £1000 I could go. Not that I have a spare grand lying around, but it’s very much saveable. For that price I would be able to see the full influence of travel in the world with Dunedin taking its name by the old name for Edinburgh and actually being modelled on Scotland’s capital. The perfect opportunity to see the real influence of human adventure over the years. Around 60’000 years ago humans first ventured out of Africa to all corners of the globe. With this brought visible changes to the world and the start of how we can change our planet; for good and for bad. Since then we have seen the rise and fall of many, many empires and changes in power and religion but this is all done by the natural human impulse to travel and explore.

Working for Tree of Knowledge allows me the opportunity to see parts of my country I would have never seen before. Couple with my personal travels, I am now lucky enough to have visited places like Laurencekirk and Los Angeles, Dunblane and Durban, Shettleston and the Shetlands or even Bradford and Bangkok. The incredible thing about this is that no matter where I venture, these places go back to how they were after the briefest of moments in each other’s company.

Or do they? I’ve always been a believer that places and travelling changes who we are but we also change the places we go. Seeing the extreme poverties in a South African township allowed me to experience a level of empathy previously unknown. The affluent Orange County in California afforded me a heightened, and slightly materialistic, ambition usually out of character for me. These places have undoubtedly changed me but they’re just places. Some of them have long lasting cultures, all weird and wonderful in their own way but you just have to look at Dubai over the last 20 years to see the massive impact humans continue to have on the world. So instead of this idea of going through life to try and ‘find yourself’, why not go through life and build who you are? Allow yourself to take small parts of the places you go to learn and grow. Leave your mark and take from it what you can.

Beyond this, remember that you shape the places you visit too, so think about how you do this and the effect this has on the next visitor. Above all, don’t litter.

My favourite villain is probably The Joker from Batman. Specifically, Heath Ledger’s famous performance in The Dark Knight. There is just something captivating about his obsession with chaos, disorder, and anarchy.

That positive impression of disorder is very much limited to the movie. Outside of that, most of us will agree that we prefer a more straightforward, ‘normal’ life.

This is mainly because when some sort of shock happens to an object or a person there are various paths it can take. If someone manages to come through an impactful event as strong as they were before, this is called resilient. And it is praised.

But we can also grow weaker due to a shock and this is what we would label fragility. However, there was (until recently) no terminology for something that benefits from shocks; to thrive from volatility.

Whilst there is a lot to be taken from resilience, there is no doubt that growing stronger is better than staying the same. So, we needed a word for it.

Various things happened on November 27th 2012. Micky Baker, the American guitarist, passed away. I turned 24 (and definitely felt fragile the next day). And Nassim Nicholas Taleb released a book titled ‘Antifragile: Things that gain from Disorder.’


“…a property of systems that increase in capability, resilience of robustness as a result of stressors, shocks, volatility, noise, mistakes, faults, attacks of failures.”


The official definition above represents Taleb’s background in the financial trading industry. A lot of his previous work tore up many of the automatically accepted beliefs of the world of money and stocks. He was the Little Red Riding Hood to the big, bad wolves of Wall Street.

This work was a continuation of his previous books, but this time with an excellent crossover with life outside of the financial world. It represented a philosophy we could apply to everyday life. Although he does not see himself as a philosopher or as a poet he describes economics as a tragedy.

There are many examples of anti-fragility throughout history. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. Thomas Edison claimed he didn’t invent the light bulb straight away. Instead he found ‘10’000 ways that don’t work.’ After 30 rejections, Stephen King threw the manuscript of his first novel in the bin. It was his wife’s retrieval that gave us Carrie.

If you want more feel free to search for stories about Elvis Presley, Vincent van Gogh, Oprah Wimphrey, Fred Astaire, Albert Einstein… The list goes on.

It’s an old cliché to talk about bouncing back from failure and demonstrating resilience. However, staying the same isn’t enough for a lot of us who really want to achieve something in life. Even after a big event in life, we want to move forward.

Bad exam results, not getting into university, failing to get a promotion, or ending a relationship can all seem upsetting at the time. With enough determination and the proper attitude, we can genuinely turn these things on their head. It’s a step beyond resilience. Resilience 2.0 if you like.

As manager of the English football club Crystal Palace, Iain Dowie was once ridiculed for using the word ‘bouncebackability’ to praise his players’ staging a dramatic comeback. There was a campaign launched to get the word added to the dictionary resulting in a lot of laughs from football fans. Little did Dowie realise that the concept he was eluding to was one of great significance.

Life can be difficult, throwing up various obstacles along the way. There’s no reason we can’t run faster after jumping a hurdle.

And yes, yes, I’m well aware Little Red Riding Hood didn’t actually beat the wolf. It was the woodsman. However, having read the story for the first time since childhood recently, it’s really quite gruesome. Fortunately for me, despite the impact of the story, I was able to get over it and come out stronger afterwards.

When andy murray won Wimbledon…

The moment Andy Murray won Wimbledon in 2013, I raised both hands in the air in a fist and closed my eyes to absorb the moment. It was an event I felt I’d never see. The main event was, of course, a Brit winning Wimbledon but even more so, it was a Scot! (We experience success less than most).

If that was my reaction, then imagine those of genuine British tennis fans. I find the sport very entertaining but I mean those with a real interest. Imagine the reactions of players who had tried and failed on behalf of Great Britain. The reaction of all coaches who had worked with Murray throughout the decades of tennis before this victory. The reaction of his current team of coaches, physios, dieticians, fitness staff etc. The reaction of his friends and family. The reaction of the man himself, Mr. Andy Murray.

Not only was this victory the culmination of 77 years of angst since Fred Perry’s triumph, but it was the product of Murray’s progress throughout his career. This had seen an improvement in Murray from his emergence as a teenager with high hopes year on year. His rise in prominence from potential to ability; from heroic to iconic. As an aside, it will be interesting to see if 15 year olds will be wearing buttoned-up Andy Murray polo shirts as they hang around swing parks drinking in 77 years’ time.

The hope of Murray winning Wimbledon had two possible paths. One could have seen the unfancied Murray claiming an against-the-odds upset to snatch the trophy (see golf’s Lawrie, Paul 1999). This would have provided great jubilation for the briefest of spells in history. However, the second path involved Murray rising in prominence year on year, step by step. We saw Murray claim the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award in 2004; remarkably reached the third round of Wimbledon in 2005 as a wild card (fatigue costing him a two set lead against David Nalbandian); reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2006; became one of only 2 players to beat Roger Federer in 2006… The list goes on.

Eventually all these awards and achievements saw Murray enter Wimbledon 2012 with the usual hope backed up with some realistic expectation. A great tournament with some great matches (Tsonga semi-final in particular) was ended in glorious failure with a 4 set defeat to the impressive Federer in the final. For a man derided for his lack of personality and character, Murray gave us a tear-jerking speech post-defeat that endeared him to the entire nation. We were comforted with an Olympic gold medal, but not satisfied. It fuelled the hunger for the Wimbledon trophy.

The summer of 2013 and the question of whether Murray could go one step further. Retention of his Brisbane International prize and a runners up spot at the Australian Open (losing to Djokovic in the final) was an encouraging start to the year. Losing the first two sets in the quarter final to Fernando Verdasco seemed to suggest a bitterly disappointing run this year. However, true to the dramatic form of his tournament he turned it around to move to the semi-final and ultimately the final.

This set up a third straight open final against Novak Djokovic. The Serb was playing at the top of his game, at times resembling playing tennis versus a brick wall. Completely unbefitting with British performance in other sports, when the pressure was on, Murray dominated and destroyed Djokovic in straight sets.

I have always been one to immerse myself in the crowd reaction regardless of whether I’m there or not. For me, the noise and joy which follow the most incredible moments in sport make sport what it is. The roar of joy, relief, pride and glory is one that will see me through the next 77 years of despair comfortably.

Choosing your mood

‘Why can’t you be in a good mood? How hard is it to decide to be in a good mood and then be in a good mood once in a while?’

I first heard this quote in a Scroobius Pip song (not my usual music taste but he’s good). Pip references the character of Lloyd Dobler, played by John Cusack in 1989’s Say Anything, as someone he interacts with whilst on a dream-based journey. Along the way he meets several people who lay some life truths on him. I’ve always found most of his lyrics incredibly thought provoking and somewhat philosophical, but this one just about floored me as it’s something I’d always had a rather guilty view of myself.

I always felt guilty believing that people can just choose to be happy. We live in a world where mental health issues have reached epidemic level; I understand for a lot of people it isn’t a choice. I guess my argument isn’t for overall life happiness but maybe isolated incidents?

Scroobius Pip’s ‘Angles’ album, featuring Dan Le Sac, was released in 2008 and instantly had a huge impact on me. It deals with some major issues such as perception of others, personal philosophies and even suicide. It’s incredible. His work is probably often categorised as British rap, but it’s more like spoken word or poetry to a beat. Quite often he is literally just speaking but it’s the words and the power behind them.


‘Years ago my mother used to say to me, she’d say…”In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.” Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.’

The first character Pip meets is Elwood P. Dowd, lifted from the 1950 movie ‘Harvey’ featuring James Stewart. The great thing about Pip’s track is that he manages to merge the movie quote into his lyrics as if they are his own.


In this life you can be oh-so-smart or oh-so-pleasant, For years I was smart; I recommend pleasant, Being smart can make you rich and bring respect and reverence, But the rewards of being pleasant are far more incandescent.’


I can’t think of too many rappers who deal with the issue of what makes you happy in life beyond ‘bling’ and other things that require aster*sks (see West, Kanye). I’m a firm believer that the world needs to get nicer before it gets smarter. We have managed to make tremendous advancements in science, medicine, engineering, technology and many other fields but we are yet to come up with a plan for peace.  Perhaps a shift in perception and focus can literally save lives.

After this, Pip even offers some advice on how to choose your mood and be more pleasant. He does this not through quoting a movie character, but this time another stranger (Billy Brown) paraphrasing some off Scroobius Pip’s other work;


‘If you can’t forgive and forget, how’s this? Forget forgiving and just accept that that’s it.’, See that’s how it’s gotta be, Then you can fall in love, get on with your life, and be free.’


Quite often in life we are guilty of allowing moments from our past sit inside and rot away. This does nothing good for us. It just prevents us from repairing relationships with those we have had trouble with, whilst also creating a more belligerent version of ourselves and creating more and more rifts in our life. The last word ‘free’ seems ambitious and fanciful but truth be told that’s exactly what would happen; we would be free from resent.

There is finally a verse where your new favourite rapper (Pip) has his last interaction. This time a gentleman named Walter Neff attempts to take the wind out our sales. Riding high on the epiphanic journey throughout the song Neff (a murdering insurance salesman from Double Indemnity, 1944) suggests that no matter the nature of the man on this planet, there is some evil within us;


‘Whether it be greed, lust, or just plain vindictiveness, There’s a level of malevolence inside of all of us.’


It took a few times listening and reading, but I think the way this is twisted towards the end is that whilst it is great to ride the crest of this positive wave, it is important we stay on board long term. The choice to be happy, pleasant and forgiving is for life. We continue to be defined by our actions until the last breath and we need to make sure we continue to be what Neff is not.

The scene and sound of Pip’s music is very unbefitting of the poetic yarns that he weaves. The truth is I could recommend any number of his songs with some sort of significant message within them but I’ve always felt a special resonance with the teachings of ‘Waiting for the beat to kick in’. My original intention with this blog was to discuss the psychology and philosophy behind choosing your mood but I couldn’t help but head down this road of some sort of life philosophy/song review hybrid. So what better way to finish off the article with the continuation of the first quote I referenced;


‘That’s all I have to say ’cause it’s a straight up fact, You control your emotions, it’s as simple as that’

The Power of Laughter

Imagine I told you I had a new medicine that could help you do the following:

  • Lose weight
  • Boost metabolism
  • Relieve depression
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Decrease stress hormones
  • Increase immune cells
  • Increase infection fighting antibodies
  • Improve resistance to disease
  • Increase productivity
  • Release endorphins
  • Improve overall sense of wellbeing
  • Temporarily remove or ease pain
  • Improve social life

You’d be quite impressed. The less moral amongst us may see a money-making opportunity in the pharmaceutical market (the mark up on such a product would be incredible!) In fact, I bet some of you would say this sounds like the best medicine ever.

And you’d be right; ‘Laughter is the best medicine.’

Ask almost anyone and they will tell you that laughing is absolutely one of the best feelings in the world. Scientifically speaking, the release of endorphins is the main cause of this and it’s no wonder. Assuming you have an equal dosage of both chemicals, endorphins have a more powerful effect than morphine.

Have you ever laughed so much that your stomach muscles were in pain? It feels like you’re laughing your way to a six-pack, doesn’t it? That’s because you are! Laughing 100 times a day has the same effect as a 10-minute blast on the rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike.

This is a particularly difficult piece to write as an adult male given our apparent reluctance to laugh. Women laugh 125% more than men which may be partly due to the psychological desire of males to make females laugh. Particularly startling for both genders is the decrease as we get older.

As children, we laugh on average 400 times per day. How many times do you think we laugh on average as an adult? It’s certainly not 400. 200? Nope. 100? Nope. 50? 20? …It’s 17…

That’s no laughing matter. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that those who laugh the least and those who have the lower life expectancy rate are the male population.

It may seem extreme to suggest laughter can prolong life (although it can) and there are many other factors that play a part, but I genuinely believe it can give a purpose in life.

There are those who take meaning from their children, their job, religion and elsewhere. However, I assure you as an adult, male, childless atheist with previous jobs I didn’t enjoy a great deal, sometimes a good chuckle was the thing I looked forward to and cherished in life.

Whether it was watching a comedian on television, having a random memory pop into my head or quite simply spending time with friends telling stories and jokes there really is no substitute for laughter.

One day that sticks in my head is the day at university I realised I no longer wanted to be a PE teacher. Being three years into a four year course named ‘PE teaching’ that was a bit of an issue. Another issue was telling my PE teacher mother having to find out the news.

As I sat in my living room feeling pretty down I was comforted by my favourite show coming on, Scrubs. There are 169 good episodes of Scrubs (the 13 in season 9 will not be acknowledged) and of all the episodes to play…

Season 4 Episode 17 (‘My Life in Four Cameras’) revolves around the treatment of former ‘Cheers’ writer Charles James (fictional, based on the real writers’ surnames). Cleverly mimicking the traditional American sitcom format throughout the episode, several issues are very conveniently resolved by the end.

In a tragic snap back to reality, things actually don’t work out well including the death of Mr. James. Despite all the things getting to the main character, the episode closes with him finding solace and comfort in the laughter from an episode of Cheers.

Sitting watching this, the irony was not lost on me and it is a lesson that has stuck ever since; ‘What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.’

Make laughter a bigger part of your day, make it a bigger priority. Next time you make a to-do list for your day write down laughter, and it doesn’t get ticked off until you reach at least 100 laughs, giggles or snorts.

Please help yourself to the free medicine. Prescribe it to others. Let the cure itself become an epidemic.

My top 5 motivational songs

Guns n Roses – Paradise City

The album that really kicked off my appreciation of ‘proper’ music. I first heard my big brother’s copy of Appetite for Destruction when I was about 7 and instantly the pop culture of Steps, the Vengaboys and the Spice Girls was in the bin. Whilst I wouldn’t exactly describe GnR as a motivational band, there are few things that get someone more pumped up than a good rock song. With the heavy drums and the classic sound of any guitar played by Slash, it gets the blood flowing. It would be an awesome entrance song to walk on stage to!


The Beach Boys – Then I Kissed Her

A little before my time. In fact I wasn’t even born until 1988. Yet this band, formed in 1961, were actually the first band I saw live. It was in Copenhagen some time around 2002. With my mum, my dad and one of my brothers we went into Tivoli Gardens just for a bit of sight seeing. There were arrows pointing in the direction of stage saying ‘Beach Boys Live this way’. We followed them assuming it would be either a tribute act (it wasn’t), fully booked (it wasn’t), rubbish seats (it wasn’t) or too expensive (it wasn’t). So we managed to get into the standing section less than 100 yards from one of the most iconic bands of all time for the entry fee in Tivoli Gardens. This was all a week before they were playing Edinburgh Castle back in our home town for £70 a ticket. What an experience as well as an amazing introduction to a whole new field of music.


Macklemore – Same Love

A great album for various reasons, but this song in particular has such an amazing message in it. The lyrics are strong enough to be a political and moral broadcast alone. Regardless of political persuasion everyone should battle for equality and standing up for the rights of all those around you. This song puts that into words alongside the amazing vocals of Mary Lambert and it works perfectly.


Oasis – Rock n Roll Star

I knew from the start that Oasis would be in here, but narrowing it down to one song has been really difficult! Ended up with Rock n Roll Star for the simple reason that doing the work we do at Tree of Knowledge, you have to portray the confidence of a rock star on that stage. There can be however many doubts floating about in your head before an event, but you need to walk up like one of the Gallagher brothers with a bit of a swagger and use that to make it awesome. ‘Tonight, I’m a rock n roll star’.


Circa Waves – T-shirt Weather

As the name would suggest, this is an awesome summer song. I believe one of the things we should look for in an inspirational song is something you’d like to drive along too. Not a drive when you’re in a rush and stuck in traffic; but a drive on the open road at your own pace and, of course, in the sunshine. Speaking from experience this song absolutely does that. It makes me think of nothing else in my life other than the amazing feeling of the sun on your back. There’s an amazing open and free feeling that summer can give, symbolised by the t-shirt and when it gets to the time of year when that happens, the good mood just comes naturally.

Benefit Mindset: A collective thinking movement

Most people working in education will have already been introduced to the Growth Mindset (the belief in potential/we can grow). Along with that they will have been introduced to the Fixed Mindset (our abilities are pre-determined and cannot change). This work from Carol Dweck has caused a massive amount of change and discussion in education all over the world, and as with any piece of work it has opened the possibility of new concepts, new ideas and new theories. Here at Tree of Knowledge we find some of these ideas good, some bad and some that blow our mind. Falling very much into the latter category, this blog is to introduce to you the Benefit Mindset.


While the Growth and Fixed Mindset seem very much in contrast with each other, the Benefit Mindset introduces a completely different angle; allowing us to use this approach alongside the oft-desired Growth Mindset. And the way to introduce it really is as simple as this:


The Fixed Mindset focuses on what we know and what we don’t know.

The Growth Mindset looks at how we learn.

The Benefit Mindset looks at why we do what we do.


Study of the original mindsets offer us so much in terms of ourselves and our achievements, but this new concept asks us to focus on the bigger picture and the role we play in it. It’s not just about making the world a better place, it’s very much how we can make the world a better place. The aspiration is ‘not to be the best in the world but to be the best for the world.’ Building on Dweck’s work, personal wellbeing can play a part in a collective wellbeing.


Looking specifically at education, there is an undoubted advantage to handing facts down from generation to generation as this creates advancements in healthcare, science, engineering, architecture etc. However, the need to develop a world that is more aware of their strengths and how that can help us and everyone around us is becoming increasingly recognised. Add this to the possibility of a more caring and compassionate world of love, peace and tolerance and we see just why the Benefit Mindset is so special.

Put simply, the Benefit mindset is concerned with the wellbeing of the self and our role in collective wellbeing. It is a more emotion focused view on success and happiness in life. Given that happiness is an emotion, it is incredible to think that this wasn’t the first mindset discussed. However, as is a common theme with mental health, we took our time recognising its significance.


Whilst the quotes above and concepts such as ‘start with why’ (Simon Sinek) have existed for a long time and are very well credited, this provides another easily-accessible way to look at holistic development in children and adults all over the world. Although Benefit Mindset might sound like a scaremongering headline in the Daily Mail, the impact it can have in and out of education should not be underestimated. It doesn’t just give us a new way to achieve success as many self-help articles out there aim to do; this gives us a whole new definition of success and what that means in life.


We live in a world where each and every generation has the ability to build upon an existing platform of knowledge. Once we learn what there is to know about sciences, maths, engineering, medicine, and everything else, we have the opportunity to add to that before passing it on. Yet we still live in a world lacking in confidence, compassion, and happiness; yes of course they exist but we need more! The Benefit Mindset can help encourage people to become smarter, wiser, and most importantly happier. This new mindset can fix the Fixed Mindset, Grow the Growth mindset and Benefit all of us.

Book review: Csikszentmihalyi – Flow

Have you ever been so engrossed in an activity that all sense of time and self has completely disappeared? Maybe your 90-minute football match has felt like five. Or perhaps you practised the guitar for so long you hadn’t even noticed that your fingers were bleeding. Or maybe even that book review you were forced to write was smashed out in a few short Friday morning hours. With this euphoric state of productivity, Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi suggests we are experiencing a state known as ‘Flow’.

Back in the days of Sigmund Freud or Arthur Schopenhauer, the term positive psychology was interpreted as not suffering, or not being miserable; to strive to reach zero. One of the best elements of the Flow theory is that it goes beyond zero. It discusses this phenomenon of maybe actually enjoying life! Csikszentmihalyi discusses not only what this concept is but also ways we can approach life to help achieve this state.

The question of what makes us happy is not answered in the physical items that surround us; it is a deeper-rooted motivation within us (also spoken about by Dan Pink in Drive amongst other books). Whilst Csikszentmihalyi is certainly not alone in writing about this concept, his theory to the everyday person is so simple it introduces psychology that can actually have a tangible benefit to our lives.


I am hesitant to give too much away as it is obviously encouraged that you read the book. However, to address one of the concerns I had, it is certainly not just yet another self-help book about ‘being at one with the music’. Flow offers the opportunity to review and reflect on our current state of productivity and to take control of how we reshape it. Applied to life in and out of work, this is a more conscious approach that guides the reader not only to the next level but provides the invigorating revelation that, as humans, we will enjoy the challenges on the way.


The book is titled Flow simply because that is the main channel we are aiming for. However, as we progress, increasing our skill or the challenge to achieve this, we will naturally fall into other categories on occasion. Boredom, apathy, anxiety and worry (amongst others) are all part of the journey – and that’s okay. There is a reassurance with this book that combines the main aim of improving who and what we are with the awareness throughout that we remain human. It is human-being meets human-doing.
